Tragic dad choked to death on McDonald's burger after joke went horribly wrong

A FATHER-of-three choked to death after he attempted to stuff a 99p McDonald's burger into his mouth, an inquest heard.

Darren Bray rolled the burger into a ball and put it into his mouth before turning blue and blacking out.

The 29-year-old joked with friends, telling them to “watch this” before stuffing the food ball into his gullet, the hearing heard.

Mr Bray then started choking, according to friend Sam Bisgrove, and tried to cough up the burger.

Mr Bisgrove said: “He picked up the burger and rolled it in half and then said 'watch this', before putting the whole burger into his mouth.

"I could see him trying to cough it up and he was making horrible coughing noises.

"I tried to hit hos back to help him clear his airway."

Mr Bray, of Barry, South Wales, tried the deadly stunt at a friend's house after drinking several cans of beer.

Mr Bisgrove’s girlfriend, Amy Bennett told the court: "Sam said he was going to McDonald's on his way back and Darren asked him to order him a cheeseburger."

Paramedics arrived at the home but were unable to restart his heart and he was pronounced dead at the home.

Dr Rhiannon Trefor told Cardiff Coroner's Court Darren died from a blockage to his airway.

She said: "When we did an internal examination there was an eight by five centimetre ball of food stuck at the back of his neck.

"Darren would not have been able to breath from that breadth with that in his airway.

"Death would have followed quite quickly from a choking of this nature."

Assistant Coroner Christopher Woolley recorded a conclusion of misadventure at the inquest.
